MC Summer Internships

Up to 6 students will work with MIT Professor of Chemical Engineering, Dr. Ariel A. Furst, for 8 weeks during July. The students will divide their time between MC and MIT working with graduate students and Dr. Furst on the following project.

Electrochemical platforms are important for both sensing and energy applications, but many electrodes are expensive and require special facilities to manufacture. Our lab has developed two methods to make electrodes without specialized equipment and facilities. We can make gold electrodes using edible gold leaf that we make into stickers, and we can make carbon electrodes using “Shrinky Dink” plastics. Though we know how to make both electrodes, the materials used, and pattern of electrodes has not yet been optimized. This summer project will involve testing different carbon-based inks and electrode patterns to determine which is best for bioreactors. We will also make gold leaf electrodes in the lab and test them as biosensors.

Up to 20 selected students will work with Professor Sharon Brown at the Wentworth Institute of Technology on understanding the basics of construction management. During this three-day course, students will potentially have the ability to audit undergraduate courses in construction or engineering during their week.   

When: July 29th, July 31st and August 2nd; 3-day course; 9 AM - 12 PM

Up to 12 students will be selected to participate in each of the Harvard MEDScience Mini-Course Modules (24 students total). This two-day course immerses students in realistic simulated medical emergencies that motivate students to think critically, and problem solve in dynamic teams. These modules introduce students to health care professions and inspire a desire for further education and training in STEM.

• Group 1 - MedScience Lab (12 students): Experience the real-life excitement of emergency room care in the high-tech simulation lab, treating STAN, our life-like interactive patient. Perform experiments with real patient samples and learn how lab tests are vital to STAN’s medical care. Work in teams of 3 with fellow lab researchers to analyze tests, diagnose and treat diseases in the Harvard Medical School lab. Receive instruction in DNA Extraction, PCR, Gel Electrophoresis, and ELISA – the lab skills required for immediate employment in clinical research.
• Group 2 - Medical Forensics (12 students): As a member of the MEDscienceLAB Forensics Team, you will learn how scientists solve crimes. Hands-on investigative inquiry will lead to analysis of crime scene evidence in the laboratory. With your team, you will play the role of the forensic scientist and learn how critical thinking and collaboration are the key to a successful criminal investigation. You will learn and practice forensics lab techniques including DNA extraction, fingerprinting, cellular microscopy, PCR, gel electrophoresis, ELISA, and hair and fiber analysis. Your team will draft a laboratory report summarizing your expert opinion that tells the story of the crime.

Up to 4 selected students will work with MIT Professor Zach Smith and MIT graduate students on synthesizing different polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) to create different types of polymer membrane films, and comparing their performance with metrics in the field such as permeability and sorption to determine how chemical structure impacts macroscopic properties.

Students will learn various characterization techniques, learn about polymers and their role in sustainability and climate change, and present their work at the end of the summer. An internship at Pratville Machine & Tool Co. is available for 1 selected student who will work with Mr. Sandro Russo '89 as an apprentice on understanding the basics of machinery, employing current technology and time-testing machining principles.

A marketing internship is available at Allied Marketing in Boston for two selected students.

This internship will be part of a “mentorship” program during the Summer. Allied Marketing is a full-service integrated marketing firm focused on the entertainment industry and consumer brands, specializing in delivering targeted programs on a local, regional or national basis. The firm is the largest privately held company of its kind in Noarth America.

Allied has a management team of creative, advertising, publicity and promotions specialists with a great depth of knowledge and industry experience. Soe of their clients include 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., Wald Disney Studios Motion Pictures, IFC, Food Network, The Disney Store, Mattel and W Hotels as well as the touring productions of Mamma Mia!, Wicked, Book of Mormon and Hamilton.

A finance internship is available at BNY Mellon for two selected students.

Students will intern with Chris Foti at BNY Mellon. BNY Mellon has been a global authority at the center of finance, driving the industry forward while remaining resilient through change. A business internship is available at Cataldo Ambulance for four selected students.

Students will intern with Dennis Cataldo '86 at Cataldo Ambulance. Mr. Dennis Cataldo is he President and CEO of Cataldo Ambulance Service, Inc. Mr. Cataldo represents the second generation of the founding Cataldo family. Under his leadership the company has continued to grow responsibly, staying focused on customer service, clinical excellence and innovation in the emergency medical services industry.  His dedication to the organization and the communities it serves is evident through his significant community involvement.

Cataldo Ambulance is the largest 911-contracted provider in Massachusetts, servicing 21 cities and town s across the northeastern part of the estate. They also partner with various healthcare institutions – from major hospital systems like Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to skilled nursing facilities – to strategize and provide medical transport solutions for their patients and residents.

A business internship is available at Cambridge Rindge & Latin High School Athletics Department for two selected students.

Students will intern with Athletic Director, Tom Arria '86 at Cambridge Rindge & Latin High School Athletics Department for the upcoming Fall athletics season. Students will understand the logistics and planning needed for a high school athletic department before an upcoming season. This includes the logistics needed or field management, scheduling opponents, scheduling uniforms, tryouts and other matters pertinent to an athletic department.

A law internship is available at Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Review for one selected student.

The student will intern with Paul Fitzgerald, Esq. '81, MC Board of Trustee and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts managing attorney, Chairman for the Board of Review and Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development. The Board of Review serves workers and employers who wish to appeal a hearing decision.  Decisions made by the board affect eligibility for unemployment benefits, training, waiver of overpayments, business successorship and related issues.  The Massachusetts Legislature created was to review unemployment cases decided by the Department of Unemployment Assistance (DUA) Hearings Department.

A marketing internship is available at CTP Boston for one selected student.

The student will intern with MC Board of Trustee, Brian Heffron '83 at CTP Boston, an integrated marketing agency. Brian’s first job – paperboy – included lugging the Boston Sunday Globe around the neighborhood. It was there and then that he decided he’d rather write the news than delivery it. Boys has he ever.  From his reporter days to his time spent as a college publicist to high-pressure jobs as spokesperson for the District Attorney and then the Attorney General of Massachusetts, Brian knows how to get out in front of a story.  And the company’s clients rely on Brian to help manage a crisis or keep their brands out in front.  He’s done that with tested PR skills and social media acumen. Brian has more than 25 years’ experience helping brands like MedExpress, Pop Warner and Stratasys tell powerful, relevant stories to their audiences. 

A finance internship is available at Focus Technology Solutions for one selected student.

The student will intern with CFO, Chris Caprio '95. Chris lends his 25+ years of experience in operational strategy, M&A, service business organic growth & expansion, planning and forecasting. During his tenure at Focus, he has been a key contributor to the company’s digital modernization, transformation and AI strategy. Recognized as an industry thought leader, Chris serves on numerous industry association boards, peer group committees and for-profit and not-for-profit board of directors. In 2022, he was named Boston Business Journal CFO of the Year and in 2024 was inducted into the Boston Smart Business Dealmakers Hall of Fame.

Focus Technology is an outsourced IT, cybersecurity and Managed Service company, helping customers manage their IT infrastructure, cloud and applications they utilize to run their business. 

A law internship is available at Foster, Walker & Di Marco for three selected students.

The students will intern with MC Board of Trustee, Roberto Di Marco, Esq. '91. A founding partner of the firm, Attorney Di Marco has graded the Massachusetts Bar Exam and is a former chair of the Malden Conservation Commission.  He also worked for the Massachusetts State Senate, where he drafted and participated in the creation of several pieces of key legislation.  He also served as a drafter of several special Senate Post Audit Reports and acted as a community liaison for the senator.

A business internship is available at Herb Chambers Companies for one selected student.

The students will intern with Herb Chambers Companies CEO, Nicolas Gennetti '02. Mr. Gennetti began his career with The Herb Chambers Companies 17 years ago, just a few weeks after his graduation from Malden Catholic. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer for the organization, overseeing multiple dealership locations, and various corporate initiatives. His responsibilities also include management of the organization’s business intelligence and information technology efforts. 

Additionally, Mr. Gennetti is the co-leader of the organization’s official partnership with the Jimmy Fund. Having lost two parents to cancer at a young age, he realizes the importance of fundraising for cancer research and awareness. He is also a steering committee member of the Unmask Cancer Gala that benefits the Jimmy Fund and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

A business internship is available at Daniel N. O'Rourke Insurance Agency for one selected student.

The students will intern with Chris O'Rourke '94 at Daniel O’Rourke Insurance Agency Inc. in Medford.

A law internship is available at the United States Postal Inspection Service for ten selected students.

The students will intern with Supervisory Postal Inspector, David Reardon, Esq. at the United States Postal Inspection Service in Boston for a three-day program. Students will get a better understanding of career opportunities in Federal Law Enforcement through the eyes of the United States Postal Inspection Service.  The internship will include an overview of the agency’s mission and operations, a review of civics, where Law Enforcement fits in society, and how Constitutional rights are protected.  The program will also include an exposure to crime scene processing, use of force by law enforcement and emergency education case, with participants being certified in the Stop the Bleed program.   

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is the federal law enforcement, crime prevention and security arm of the U.S. Postal Service.  Founded by Benjamin Franklin and established on August 7, 1775, the Inspection Service is one of the nation’s oldest federal law enforcement agencies enforcing the law, preventing crimes, and keeping customers, employees and the mail safe.  Postal Inspectors are actively engaged in targeting theft, disrupting drug traffickers, protecting children from exploitation, solving violent crimes and educating the public about fraud scams and much more.

A media internship is available at Urban Media Arts for three selected students.

Urban Media Arts (UMA) is offering an internship opportunity for a team of up to three high school students who collectively have skills and/or interest in writing, photography, video production, and/or podcasting and are interested in helping our community be climate resilient and proactive about addressing climate change. 

This group would work in part together, in part independently – as appropriate - to publish one multimedia article for Malden's citizen journalism digital publication Neighborhood View and help produce either a podcast episode or a video recorded roundtable discussion on a topic related to the City’s Climate Action Plan. 

They would work with an UMA advisor to narrow their topic, divide up the work, decide the media, and come up with a plan and schedule.  

The interns would gain a suite of skills, depending on what they decide their role and focus will be. Skills include: journalistic writing, podcast production, interviewing experts for an article or podcast, working the camera on a studio shoot, helping to break down complex scientific and/or technical information into accessible bites the public can be activated by. 

The work of this team of interns will be a great supplement to the City's outreach efforts to bring the final Climate Action Plan and its contents to the public in a meaningful way.
