Middle School Program of Study
Middle School Overview
At Malden Catholic, we provide a compassionate yet rigorous academic environment for our 7th and 8th grade students. The goal of our program is to prepare students for future learning in 9th – 12th grade and beyond. Through the formation of a strong academic foundation paired with a developed skillset of learning tools, our students strive for excellence in all aspects of school life.
We place a strong emphasis on foundational skills in english, history, science, math, theology, and world languages. Throughout the Middle School experience, students will receive the necessary background knowledge to continue their studies at an accelerated rate in 9th grade.
Our MC Readiness program provides daily opportunities for skill development and support under the guidance of our skilled staff. The program consists of the following collaborative courses:
- Study Skills – Instructors will provide direction and instruction on topics such as executive functioning, organization, studying habits, time management, and other learning skills.
- Advisory – Led by our school counseling department, this program addresses the social, emotional, and mental health needs of our students. Lessons focus on healthy living, balance, communication, prosocial behaviors, and skills navigating the tumultuous teenage years.
- Academic Reinforcement – Facilitated by cores subject teachers, this program provides students regular opportunities for extra help, homework guidance, and continued instruction. Students will have access to various teachers during a dedicated block for independent work.
At MC we provide a wholistic student experience, this commitment is reflected in our Academic Enrichment program. This program ensures that every area of the brain is engaged on a daily basis. Through a mixture of arts, music, and technology, we challenge our students to think abstractly and creatively, providing a moment for individual expression during a busy day. This program includes:
- Computer Science & Technological Literacy – this two-year program is designed to provide foundational knowledge in computer science and literacy, ensuring that all students have the foundational knowledge necessary to continue pursuing complex studies. Students will be introduced to coding, computer science, digital citizenship, and the engineering design process.
- Studio & Expressive Art – built into the Middle School experience, this half-year program provides students the opportunity to engage in a variety of mediums of artistic expression. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with various forms of artistic expression, allowing them to refine these interests during their high school studies.
- Introduction to Music – Students will receive an introduction to music theory, production, and appreciation. Whether it be through an introductory piano course or through the study of famous composers, students will be encouraged to explore the depths of musical expression.
