Polymer degradation: Each person in the US throws away about 80 pounds of clothes each year, more than half of which is polyester. The goal of this project is to evaluate the efficiency of proteins to degrade polyesters and generate useful chemical products.

Polymers for water filtration: Both heavy metals and perfluorinated “forever chemicals” are prevalent water contaminants. The goal of this project is to use electrochemistry to make polymer materials for the specific removal of these contaminants.

Seia Bio is a science-driven startup working to make beneficial microbes more effective and widely used in agriculture and consumer products. We are offering a hands-on summer internship for two MC students interested in biology, chemistry, or engineering.  Interns will split their time between MC and Seia Bio, working alongside scientists in real laboratory settings. At Seia Bio, students will be on-site with our R&D team, helping keep the lab running while supporting experiments tied to the development of microbial products. This includes preparing media, plating microbes, maintaining cultures, growing plants, and assisting with product development work.

This internship is designed to give students real exposure to day-to-day scientific work: learning proper lab techniques, understanding how experiments are run and repeated, and seeing how science turns into real-world products. Students will gain confidence working in a lab, learn from professional scientists, and experience what it’s like to work at an early-stage biotech startup.

The ideal candidates are curious, responsible, detail-oriented, and excited to learn by doing. Prior coursework or interest in biology, chemistry, or engineering is helpful but not required — enthusiasm and a willingness to work hands-on in the lab matter most.

•         Participate in a one-day internship-style shadowing experience alongside a registered nurse, where you’ll observe real-time hospital workflows, patient care practices, and interdisciplinary collaboration in a fast-paced clinical environment. This opportunity offers exposure to both daytime and nighttime routines within an inpatient gyn/oncology and surgical unit, caring for diverse male and female patients. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of nursing responsibilities, professional standards, and the importance of patient confidentiality while exploring the dynamic role of nurses in delivering high-quality care. The Intern will be required to sign a confidentiality form.

Medical Assistant and Front Desk Intern internships are available at Agility Orthopedics for 2 selected students.

Medical Assistant Intern: The student would have the opportunity to observe and assist with basic clinical workflows in an orthopedic practice. This may include shadowing medical assistants and providers, learning about patient intake, observing rooming procedures, preparing exam rooms, and gaining exposure to musculoskeletal care in an outpatient setting.

Front Desk/Administrative Intern: The student would gain experience with the administrative side of a medical practice, including observing patient scheduling, insurance verification processes, patient check-in/check-out, and general front office operations.

* Details:  We are an orthopedic specialty practice that provides evaluation and treatment for musculoskeletal conditions, including sports injuries, joint conditions, and other orthopedic concerns.

* Length/Hours:We are flexible, but a typical internship could run 1–2 days per week for 2–3 weeks, approximately 4–6 hours per day, depending on the student’s availability and our clinic schedule.

* Expectations: Students should come prepared to observe, ask questions, maintain professionalism and patient confidentiality, and participate in appropriate shadowing opportunities with both clinical and administrative staff. This includes the logistics needed or field management, scheduling opponents, scheduling uniforms, tryouts and other matters pertinent to an athletic department.

A business/trade/healthcare/transportation internship is available at Cataldo Ambulance for four selected students.

• Designed to give high school students access to real-world work experience, the Cataldo Ambulance Service Internship program offers the opportunity to experience the Emergency Medical Services industry in variety of departments within the organization. This program is ideal for students who are interested in pursuing a career in health care or transportation services.  Students will commit to10-15 hours per week (days TBD) between late June and July.

  Students will have the opportunity to meet with the department leader in each area as a mentor and will be assigned to a supervisor who will oversee all day-to-day activities. Interested students for all positions must be able to meet the following qualifications:

The court's 82 justices sit in 20 courthouses in all 14 state counties.The Superior Court has exclusive original jurisdiction of first-degree murder cases, and has original jurisdiction of all other crimes, civil actions over $50,000, matters where parties are seeking equitable relief, and actions including labor disputes where parties are seeking injunctive relief.

* About “Neat Streets”: Neat Streets brings together community based organizations to set up a city-wide program and to facilitate neighborhood cleanups along with post-cleanup celebrations for their completed Neat Streets. Currently, The Friends of the Malden River organize neighborhood cleanups with existing groups (e.g. Idle Hands Craft Ales Community Outreach, Gentle Giant Rowing Club, Paddle Boston, Tufts' Tisch College, AVOYCE Youth Leaders, GMAAC Youth Leaders, High Rock Church, Malden High School youth groups, and Malden Catholic youth groups). These groups agree that a unified effort would be an effective way to reach out to under-served communities. A collaboration of community groups would identify "hot spots" (e.g. Salem Street) and reach out to the neighbors through promotional material. During and after the cleanups, we will collect relevant data with ongoing surveys filled out by residents and businesses to help improve our efforts and to assist the City of Malden in community outreach. We will partner with Mystic River Watershed Association and Malden's City Yard for the program.

Social capital is the collaboration of good will and reciprocal obligation that we build by extending ourselves and fulfilling obligations to others in our community. Even simple daily interactions – a greeting at the bus stop, a nod in the supermarket, a neighborhood cleanup – all serve to build social capital for all parties. Our neighborhood groups, including residents and businesses, will benefit from building this social capital together. Cleaning their neighborhoods will empower residents, educate others by modeling, build pride with tangible results, and beautify our city.

* The internship:  Help make Malden streets cleaner by assisting a coalition of neighborhood organizations and businesses to organize cleanups and promote awareness through communications media, outreach and hands-on projects. Our summer project would be to launch the Neat Streets program; a program to facilitate Malden neighborhood cleanups along with a post-cleanup celebration for their completed Neat Streets. 

* Tasks include:

• Identify (a) neighborhood(s) in Malden that need(s) the most attention for a street clean-up (this would include electronically surveying local organizations).  We will create a rubric to determine a most successful launch.
• Coordinate the July 25th neighborhood cleanup with the City of Malden, Malden Department of Public Works, Mystic River Watershed Association, and at least one local community based organization for a targeted neighborhood.
• Create a marketing plan for community outreach and involvement for this cleanup and the entire program.
• Write press releases for local papers highlighting the program with the Neat Streets Sidewalk Sweeper.  
•  Partner with an adult and go door to door (in the targeted neighborhood) with the invitation and information regarding their Neighborhood CleanUp and post-cleanup celebration.
•  Create social media to promote the citywide cleanups. 
•  Help to collect relevant data with ongoing surveys filled out by residents and businesses to help improve our efforts and to assist the City of Malden in community outreach.
•  Write a news story for Neighborhood View about the Neat Streets process and results.

· Students must be willing to walk neighborhoods and talk with neighbors with a Neat Street partner.  They will develop skills in communication, event planning, organizing with municipal and community based organization leaders, collecting data, learn about the scientific approach using data, and production of social media for environmental advocacy. 

Schedule:

• Internship would span over three weeks, beginning July 7th and ending with the event on July 25th.
• In-person gatherings would be during the late afternoons (3:00-5:30) of July 7th, July 14,  July 21,  July 24  with a neighborhood cleanup on July 25th (10:00 AM-1:00 PM). (Meeting places will vary according to needs)
• There will be  (3)  independent one hour work blocks within each week for writing, electronic marketing, electronic community outreach, social media posts.
