Students will divide their time between MC and MIT working with graduate students and post docs from Prof. Ariel Furst & Prof Zachary Smiths’ lab under the supervision of Dr. Furst on the following projects:

• Polymer degradation: Each person in the US throws away about 80 pounds of clothes each year, more than half of which is polyester. The goal of this project is to evaluate the efficiency of proteins to degrade polyesters and generate useful chemical products.
•  Polymers for water filtration: Both heavy metals and perfluorinated “forever chemicals” are prevalent water contaminants. The goal of this project will be to use electrochemistry to make polymer materials for the specific removal of these contaminants.

Up to 20 selected students will work with Professor Sharon Brown at the Wentworth Institute of Technology on understanding the basics of construction management. During this three-day course, students will potentially have the ability to audit undergraduate courses in construction or engineering during their week.

Join the MEDscienceTECH Moonshot Program to build cutting edge solutions to current medical technology problems. Students will learn the design thinking process and present their prototypes to industry professionals throughout the program. Students will be exposed to computer science, artificial intelligence, surgical robotics, and engineering to arm them with the skills of the future.

MEDscienceLAB Forensics: As a member of the MEDscienceLAB Forensics Team, you will learn how scientists solve crimes. Hands-on investigative inquiry will lead to analysis of crime scene evidence in the laboratory. With your team, you will play the role of the forensic scientist and learn how critical thinking and collaboration are thekey to a successful criminal investigation!

This is a Manufacturing Engineering Internship, providing the student with a solid experience in the Medical Device industry regulated under FDA compliance. This internship will give the student experience in designing 3D printed instruments, custom created software, technical writing and manufacturing processing (all under close mentorship of manufacturing engineering).

Medical Assistant and Front Desk Intern internships are available at Agility Orthopedics for 2 selected students.

Medical Assistant Intern: The Medical Assistant intern would work with a medical assistant, learn to room patients, casting, splinting, blood draw, vitals, they would learn about x-ray and how to determine what x-rays are needed for the patient. They would learn about medications, prescriptions, and triage. Orthopedic physicians as well as interventional pain management physicians perform procedures in the office. A student intern may have the opportunity to observe a surgery at one of the hospitals with one of Agility’s doctors & PA's if interested.

Front Desk Intern: The Front Desk intern would learn how to schedule appointments, greet patients, check patients in, out, enter patient demographics, verify patient demographics, collect copays, verify insurances, call patients to set up MRI follow up appointments, work on work ques with various front desk tasks on them.

Students will intern with Athletic Director, Tom Arria '86 at Cambridge Rindge & Latin High School Athletics Department for the upcoming Fall athletics season. Students will understand the logistics and planning needed for a high school athletic department before an upcoming season. This includes the logistics needed or field management, scheduling opponents, scheduling uniforms, tryouts and other matters pertinent to an athletic department.

A business internship is available at Cataldo Ambulance for three selected students.

A business internship is available at Herb Chambers Companies for one selected student.

The students will intern with Herb Chambers Companies CEO, Nicolas Gennetti '02. Mr. Gennetti began his career with The Herb Chambers Companies 17 years ago, just a few weeks after his graduation from Malden Catholic. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer for the organization, overseeing multiple dealership locations, and various corporate initiatives. His responsibilities also include management of the organization’s business intelligence and information technology efforts. 

Additionally, Mr. Gennetti is the co-leader of the organization’s official partnership with the Jimmy Fund. Having lost two parents to cancer at a young age, he realizes the importance of fundraising for cancer research and awareness. He is also a steering committee member of the Unmask Cancer Gala that benefits the Jimmy Fund and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The Superior Court is a trial court of general jurisdiction for Massachusetts, and is committed to delivering high-quality justice with dignity and speed. The court's 82 justices sit in 20 courthouses in all 14 state counties.The Superior Court has exclusive original jurisdiction of first-degree murder cases, and has original jurisdiction of all other crimes, civil actions over $50,000, matters where parties are seeking equitable relief, and actions including labor disputes where parties are seeking injunctive relief.

The Superior Court also has exclusive authority to convene medical malpractice tribunals, has appellate jurisdiction over certain administrative proceedings, and may hold naturalization sittings in any city or town. – from Mass.gov

• Federal Law Enforcement/Legal Internship

The students will intern with Supervisory Postal Inspector, David Reardon, Esq. at the United States Postal Inspection Service in Boston for a three-day program. Students will get a better understanding of career opportunities in Federal Law Enforcement through the eyes of the United States Postal Inspection Service.  The internship will include an overview of the agency’s mission and operations, a review of civics, where Law Enforcement fits in society, and how Constitutional rights are protected.  The program will also include an exposure to crime scene processing, use of force by law enforcement and emergency education case, with participants being certified in the Stop the Bleed program.   

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is the federal law enforcement, crime prevention and security arm of the U.S. Postal Service.  Founded by Benjamin Franklin and established on August 7, 1775, the Inspection Service is one of the nation’s oldest federal law enforcement agencies enforcing the law, preventing crimes, and keeping customers, employees and the mail safe.  Postal Inspectors are actively engaged in targeting theft, disrupting drug traffickers, protecting children from exploitation, solving violent crimes and educating the public about fraud scams and much more.

A media internship is available at Urban Media Arts for three selected students.

Urban Media Arts (UMA) is offering an internship opportunity for a team of up to three high school students from Malden Catholic who collectively have skills and/or interest in writing, photography, video production, and/or podcasting and are interested in helping our community become more aware of a city initiative.

This group of interns would work in part together, in part independently – as appropriate - to publish one multimedia article for Malden's citizen journalism digital publication Neighborhood View and help produce either a podcast episode or a video recorded roundtable discussion on a topic related to ONE of these city initiatives.

The selected interns would work with an UMA advisor to narrow their topic, divide up the work, decide the media, and come up with a plan and schedule. The interns would gain a suite of skills, depending on what they decide their role and focus will be. Skills could potentially include: journalistic writing, podcast production, civic engagement, interviewing experts for an article or podcast, video and/or photography, and studio production. The work of this team of interns will be a great supplement to the City's outreach efforts to build awareness about climate resilienceand/or open space & recreation opportunities.
