2023 Malden Catholic Summer Internship Program

Up to 20 selected students will work with Mrs. Abbas and Mr. Douglas Shattuck, Director of Science at Saint Joseph School of Wakefield.  After selections are announced students will start meeting periodically, continuing their work throughout the Summer.  The goal is for the students to produce a joint White Paper with Mrs. Abbas on their research for submission during late Fall 2023.

When: June 20th through July 20th; weekdays 9AM - 3PM; Students will be working at MC engineering labs for 4 days

Up to 8 students will work with MIT Professor of Chemical Engineering, Dr. Ariel A. Furst, for 4 weeks during July.  The students will divide their time between MC and MIT working with graduate students on the following project.  

Electrochemical platforms are important for both sensing and energy applications, but many electrodes are expensive and require special facilities to manufacture. Our lab has developed two methods to make electrodes without specialized equipment and facilities. We can make gold electrodes using edible gold leaf that we make into stickers, and we can make carbon electrodes using “Shrinky Dink” plastics. Though we know how to make both electrodes, the materials used, and pattern of electrodes has not yet been optimized. This summer project will involve testing different carbon-based inks and electrode patterns to determine which is best for bioreactors. We will also make gold leaf electrodes in the lab and test them as biosensors.

Up to 10 selected students will attend a one-week class at MC on construction management with 2+ field trips to construction and engineering sites for real-world construction, engineering and architecture experiences.  This class will be taught by MC faculty member Mr. Reardon.

Urban Media Arts (UMA) is offering an internship opportunity for high school students from Malden Catholic to serve as interns for two UMA projects: Filmbuilding Malden: Our City in Motion and the Environment & Media campaign. The internship will involve working with the lead of both projects to help create video and take photos of the film building process, do some social media work and graphics, assist with field visits to various sites and local organizations working to restore the environment, hand out flyers regarding environment initiatives, give input to the design of a public service video, help table at the summer festival, and more.

This opportunity will expose students to the power of media to engage, inform, and build community, have the opportunity meet filmmakers, environment professionals, and members of the community and develop skills in creating, sharing, and editing media.

The Harvard MEDScience Mini-Course Module immerses students in realistic simulated medical emergencies that motivate students to think critically and problem solve in dynamic teams. These modules introduce students to health care professions and inspire a desire for further education and training in STEM.

Limited to 12 students, this 3 hour session will take place at Harvard Medical School.

The purpose of this effort is to use gene therapy to fix a specific mutation in the PRPH2 gene, known as the R172W PRPH2 mutation, which causes significant central vision loss and blindness in individuals. The PRPH2 gene is only expressed in eye cells, which are inaccessible for gene editing. To correct the R172W PRPH2 mutation in humans, we aim to generate a fibroblast cell line from patient and donor skin tissue and apply a molecular genetic approach to correct the R172W mutation for human gene therapy. Human fibroblasts do not express PRPH2 therefore we will activate the silenced gene by CRISPR activation and establish a PRPH2-expressing cell line. Using this cell line and also the PRE-19 PRPH2- expressing cell line we will prime editing, using the CRISPR cas9 approach, the gene mutation in vitro a the first step for human gene therapy.

Biography

Mr. Joseph O'Donnell, also known as Joe, founded Boston Culinary Group, Inc. in 1961. and served as its Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and Director. Mr. O'Donnell serves as Chairman of the Board of Centerplate, Inc. Mr. O’Donnell also owns Allied Advertising Agency, the leading advertising agency in the motion picture industry. Mr. O’Donnell serves as a Trustee of the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and founder of The Joey Fund. He also served as Director of the Associates of Harvard Business School and is a member of various Visiting Committees at Harvard College. He was a Trustee of Malden Catholic High School and the Winsor School in Boston. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Children's Hospital Trust, is an overseer at the Boston Boy's and Girl's Club, is a member of the Genetics Advisory Board at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Board of Associates at the Whitehead Institute. Mr. O’Donnell received The Outstanding Service Award from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in 1983, 1986 and 1989. He was awarded The Breath of Life Award in 1994, the Foundation’s highest honor. Mr. O’Donnell received The Richard T. Flood Award in 1992 and 1997 from Harvard College and has served as an elected Director of the Harvard Alumni Association (1995-1998), and the Board of Overseers at Harvard College (1998-2005). In 2005, Mr. O’Donnell received the Harvard Business School’s most distinguished honor, the Alumni Achievement Award, recognizing him for his community and philanthropic efforts. Also in 2005, the Massachusetts Restaurant Association inducted Mr. O’Donnell into the MRA Hall of Fame for his extraordinary dedication to the hospitality industry. From 1971 to 1976, he was the Associate Dean of Students for the Harvard Business School MBA program and later served as Harvard's Administrative Director for the Program for Management Development. Mr. O'Donnell graduated from Harvard College in 1967 and the Harvard Business School in 1971.  Mr. O’Donnell was a Co-Chair of The Essential Malden Catholic Campaign.

Rob has given seminars on business start-up and succession planning in both public and private venues around Greater Boston to various groups and has been a guest on various radio shows. He has chaired several charitable events and acted as Master of Ceremonies at events honoring elected officials. He volunteers his time with Malden Catholic High School and Brown University Alumni Associations. He is a member of the Italian American Citizens, volunteered for the American Jewish Committee’s Judge Learned Hand Award committee and participated in several election campaigns, including his own run for school committee. He has graded the Massachusetts Bar Exam and is a former chair of the Malden Conservation Commission.  He is a trustee of Malden Catholic High School.

Before founding Foster, Walker & Di Marco, P.C., Mr. Di Marco was associated with various business law firms in Boston and in the North Shore. He worked in the Massachusetts State Senate. While at the state house, he drafted and participated in the creation of several pieces of key legislation. He was a drafter of several special Senate Post Audit reports and acted as a community liaison for the senator.

He is a lifelong resident of Malden. He attended Brown University where he graduated with honors. He is also a graduate of Northeastern School of Law. He has completed graduate work towards his master’s degree in special education. His wife, Maria Teresa, is a professor of Ethics at Merrimack College with a doctorate from Boston College. They have three daughters, Destiny Theresa, Juana Ines and Petra Luisa and a son, Giovanni Antonio.

He advocates for and advise his clients on Socially Responsible Business Practices.

He is admitted to practice before all state courts in Massachusetts, the Federal District of Massachusetts. and the US Court of Appeals, DC Circuit.

Mr. Di Marco is a member of the Malden Catholic Board of Trustees and also a Founding Member of the Malden Catholic Alumni Association (MCAA).

3 selected students will have the opportunity to intern with Attorney Di Marco’s firm for one week over the summer.

Paul is Managing Attorney for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Chairman for the Board of Review and Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development. The Board of Review serves workers and employers who wish to appeal a hearing decision.  Decisions made by the board affect eligibility for unemployment benefits, training, waiver of overpayments, business successorship, and related issues. The Massachusetts Legislature created was to review unemployment cases decided by the Department of Unemployment Assistance (DUA) Hearings Department.

One student will work assist the Director of Cambridge Athletics, Mr. Thomas Arria '96, in the preparation for the upcoming Fall athletics season.  The intern will understand the logistics and planning needed for a high school athletic department before an upcoming season.  This includes the logistics needed for field management, scheduling opponents, scheduling uniforms, tryouts and other matters pertinent to an athletic department.

Foti Law is a Malden based law firm with a second office in Boston. Attorney Matthew Foti is a Malden native who grew up in the school system and attended Malden Catholic High School. Foti Law specializes in the practice of personal injury. This includes motor vehicle accidents, motorcycle accidents, pedestrian accidents, slip and falls, as well as many other injury cases. Most personal injury lawsuits require a victim or plaintiff to prove the defendant’s negligence. This means that a Malden personal injury attorney will need to show that it is more likely than not that the defendant owed a duty of reasonable care and that duty was breached. Due to this breach and the defendants unsafe conduct, the plaintiff was injured and incurred damages as a consequence.

Matthew M. Foti is the principal attorney at Foti Law. Attorney Foti is a civil and criminal litigator who focuses his practice on personal injury. Matt has recovered millions of dollars for people injured in cases ranging from simple negligence to the most sophisticated and complex liability cases. Matt grew up in Malden and attending Malden Catholic (class of 2007). While living in Malden he played many sports including football, baseball, and lacrosse.

Away from the office, Matt spends time with his wife and daughter. He is a die-hard Boston sports fan who prides himself on his knowledge of fantasy football.

Mr. Gennetti began his career with The Herb Chambers Companies 17 years ago, just a few weeks after his graduation from Malden Catholic. He is currently the Corporate Manager of Operations for the organization, overseeing multiple dealership locations, and various corporate initiatives. His responsibilities also include management of the organization’s business intelligence and information technology efforts. 

Additionally, Mr. Gennetti is the co-leader of the organization’s official partnership with the Jimmy Fund. Having lost two parents to cancer at a young age, he realizes the importance of fundraising for cancer research and awareness. He is also a steering committee member of the Unmask Cancer Gala that benefits the Jimmy Fund and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Brian’s first job – paperboy – included lugging the Boston Sunday Globe around the neighborhood. It was there and then that he decided he’d rather write the news than deliver it. Boy, has he ever. From his reporter days to his time spent as a college publicist to high-pressure jobs as spokesperson for the District Attorney and then the Attorney General of Massachusetts, Brian knows how to get out in front of a story. And our clients rely on Brian to help manage a crisis or keep their brands out in front. He’s done that with tested PR skills and social media acumen. Brian has more than 25 years experience helping brands like MedExpress, Pop Warner and Stratasys tell powerful, relevant stories to their audiences.

Mr. Heffron is a member of the Malden Catholic Board of Trustees.

Two students will be selected for an internship with Massport Police in Boston through the Massport Police Student Intern Program – a program dedicated to students who are interested in the field of law enforcement.  Interns can expect to be assigned to different units within the Department to allow for a well-rounded look at the many duties that Massport police officers are tasked with on a daily basis.  Interns may also be assigned to assist with projects and have responsibilities within headquarters.  

These internships are for 10-15 hours / week and 2-3 weeks for the Summer with some flexibility.  

Cataldo Ambulance is offering positions for selected interns in Marketing & Communications (writing and designing), Cataldo Education (running and logistics for Cataldo’s educational programming), Medical (Mobile Integrated Health) and Billing/Finance departments.

Up to 10 selected students will have the opportunity to attend a three day program hosted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.  The program will be lead by Supervisory Postal Inspector David M. Reardon, Esq. at the Boston office of the United States Postal Inspection Service.  Students will get a better understanding of career opportunities in Federal Law Enforcement through the eyes of the United States Postal Inspection Service.  The internship will include an overview of the agency’s mission and operations, a review of civics, where Law Enforcement fits in society, and how Constitutional rights are protected.  The program will also include an exposure to crime scene processing, use of force by law enforcement and emergency education case, with participants being certified in the Stop the Bleed program.
