United in Spirit, Intent on One Purpose

United in Spirit, Intent on One Purpose
by John Thornburg

Welcome to the 2019-20 school year! I am excited to get the school year underway and I am thankful you chose Malden Catholic High School. As the only Catholic, codivisional school in the area, I know your son or daughter is going to have an outstanding experience this school year.

It is my privilege to serve you as Headmaster and look forward to becoming better acquainted with each of you. I hope to see you at one of our many school events. Many families have stopped in this summer and I have enjoyed the time together. I believe parents play an important role in Catholic schools in supporting programming and reinforcing what is learned at school at home.

I addressed the entire student body at the end of the first day of school today. Our all school assembly served several purposes. First, I think it is important we come together as a community to celebrate the start of another school year. Second, I wanted to introduce those faculty and staff new to our school so we can give them a warm welcome as an entire school. Lastly, I wanted to share my thoughts about the theme for this school year - United in Spirit, Intent on One Purpose.

I met with the student councils (boys and girls) this past summer and discussed my desire to have a school theme this year. The students were receptive, and we had some meaningful discussions determining a theme that the students felt was important and relevant. This year’s theme comes from St. Paul’s book to the Philippians. In the second chapter, he challenges the reader to adopt the same attitude of humility found in our Lord Jesus Christ. We are to not think of ourselves as more important than others and consider the interests of others as well as our own. These acts of humility are designed to bring unity and strengthen relationships.

The students I met with shared an observation they wished Malden Catholic “felt more like one school.” They were referring to the two schools (boys and girls) not always being on the same page and wanted to have a theme for the school year which would serve to foster a stronger, more unified school. I thought this was a mature observation and one that I wholeheartedly agree with.

A priority for this school year will be to listen to the voices of our entire school community to honor this theme and move us forward in the tradition of the Xaverian Brothers and continue to make Malden Catholic the best school in the area!

I ask for your prayers as we begin this school year.
