On Tuesday, February 5th, the Malden Catholic Mock Trial team captured its 6th consecutive regional championship.
In a decisive win over Winthrop High School at Saugus Town Hall, the Lancers finished their preliminary round at an unbeaten 3-0 and will now advance to the MASSBAR State Tournament at Clark University in Worcester on March 3. The Commonwealth's top-performing 32 teams are invited to compete at Clark, where teams will look to prevail twice in one day against randomly drawn teams to move on to the state quarterfinals held later in March.
Tuesday's win marked Malden Catholic's 20th consecutive preliminary round victory, and sealed the first-ever region title for the codivisional team with boys and girls competing together. Perfect scorers for the trial against Winthrop included juniors Ralph Carbone and Jake Morrow, and seniors James Mawn, Edward Ardolino, and Temitayo Lukan.
The 2019 case, the United States of America v. Nat Hart, departs from the norm of cases held within the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth, being brought rather in Federal District Court. The case takes up a controversial (fictional) allegation of excessive use of force by an officer under the color of law, and asks students to consider whether or not the Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable search and seizure was violated by the actions of the defendant.
Best of luck to the Mock Trialers in the State Tournament!
