Malden Catholic Students Honor Others at Lazarus Ministry

On September 25, Malden Catholic High School students visited the St. Anthony Shrine in Boston to participate in the St. Anthony’s Lazarus Ministry.  The Lazarus Ministry’s motto “Honoring Death with Dignity” honors and provides burials for the homeless who have died.

With assistance from local funeral homes, the Shrine has been able to provide funeral services and Masses to many of those who have passed.  St. Anthony Shrine offers its services for free and even provides a grave space.

On Wednesday, eight Malden Catholic students were called to be pallbearers for one of the services.  The students described the event as a “profound experience” and something they want Malden Catholic to continue.

Malden Catholic senior, James Guinee, said the service was eye-opening and helped the students realize that not everyone has someone around them in their final moments.

“We saw the importance of our attendance today, as we helped this man finally receive his funeral mass.  Carrying the casket at this funeral was an amazing experience, something we will never forget” Guinee said.

Bro. Thomas Puccio, the Principal of the Malden Catholic School for Boys, hopes that this can become an annual ministry that Malden Catholic students can participate in.

“It’s a beautiful way to be reminded that each of us, regardless of means or fortunes in life, deserves to be remembered with dignity” Bro. Puccio said.
