MALDEN, MA (April 12, 2019) – With profound gratitude, Acting Headmaster Bro. Thomas J. Puccio, C.F.X. announced that Malden Catholic High School has received a $500,000 gift from Dr. Eugene and Sallyann Fama, graduates of the Class of 1956 at Malden Catholic and Girls Catholic respectively. A significant portion of the gift will be dedicated to providing scholarships for deserving students with demonstrated academic ability and high financial need.
For Dr. and Mrs. Fama, the gift reflects both a firm commitment to the future of Malden Catholic as a codivisional high school and an acknowledgement of the Malden Catholic-Girls Catholic tradition that was so formative for both of them. “Bringing the School for Girls to Malden Catholic in this new model is a historic undertaking and well worth our support,” said Dr. Fama, a 2013 Nobel laureate in economic sciences. Referencing the legacy of Girls Catholic, Sally added, “It is so nice to know that in making this contribution, I’ve been able to do something good for the school I attended, too.”
Already generous benefactors to the recently completed Essential Malden Catholic Campaign and the Fund for Malden Catholic, the Famas intend for a significant portion of this gift to make a difference in the lives of deserving students who would not otherwise be able to afford a Malden Catholic education. Next year, recipients of these Fama scholarships will be chosen among students from urban communities who have distinguished themselves as high academic achievers, strong participants in the co-curricular activities of their schools, and young men and women of excellent character. Scholarships will be made available to students in both the School for Boys and the School for Girls and will be renewable over four years.
The gift will provide a substantial boost to Malden Catholic School for Girls, which is preparing to welcome its second class of young women this fall as it expands its programmatic offerings in academics, athletics, and the arts. “We are so blessed to count Gene and Sallyann among the members of our MC family,” said School for Girls Principal Lisa Cenca. “Their additional support will allow us to grow our programming and help students who might not have had this incredible opportunity were it not for their generosity.”
These Fama scholarships will allow Malden Catholic to further its mission of providing an exceptional Catholic, college-preparatory education to the families of its diverse Greater Boston landscape. Said Board Chairman Jim Donovan, “Gene and Sallyann are unwavering in their commitment and dedication to the mission of Catholic education at Malden Catholic. Their gift ensures that Malden Catholic will continue to provide a solid foundation for student success and achievement in the years to come. We are most grateful to Gene and Sallyann for all that they have done to position the MC experience as a transformative force in the lives of our students and society.”
Dr. Eugene F. Fama is the Robert R. McCormick Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He is widely recognized as the “father of modern finance.” Parents to four and grandparents to ten, Gene and Sallyann reside in Chicago.
