Malden Catholic High School has received a generous gift of $100,000 from Dr. Daniel J. McCarthy and Mrs. Margaret (Noonan) McCarthy to establish scholarship funds that will support the School for Boys and the School for Girls.
Margaret (Noonan) McCarthy GCHS 1950 has made a generous gift of $50,000 to establish the “Margaret T (Noonan) McCarthy GCHS 1950 Scholarship Fund” that will fund scholarships for young women in the newly opened Malden Catholic School for Girls. Margaret is delighted to see that Malden Catholic has expanded educational opportunities to young women and their families and wanted to support its continued success in providing an excellent Catholic-based education for those girls and those to come, just as Girls’ Catholic High School did for the fortunate girls of her day.
After graduating from GCHS, Margaret “Peggy” McCarthy went on to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital School of Nursing obtaining her R.N. in 1953. Her nursing career took her to 5 states including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, New Jersey and Georgia, working at 9 different hospitals as a staff nurse and Supervisor. She later earned her B.S. degree from Emmanuel College while in her early 50’s, graduating on the same day as her youngest child, Mary, graduated from high school. She then began a successful 30-year career in real estate on Boston’s North Shore while raising their three children with her husband Dan, and this year will celebrate with him their 65th wedding anniversary.
Concurrent with Margaret’s gift, Dr. Daniel J. McCarthy MCHS 1950 gifted an additional $50,000 to establish “The Dr. Daniel J. McCarthy MCHS 1950 Scholarship Fund” to support scholarships for young men at MC. These gifts follow earlier ones since December 2004 with the establishment of “The Margaret M. Dunphy GCHS 1961 Scholarship Fund” to support girls at GCHS in receiving their education, Margaret Dunphy being Margaret McCarthy’s dear cousin. Malden Catholic is most grateful to Margaret and Dan for their generosity, dedication, and commitment to our young women and men and with deep gratitude thanks them for their generous support of today’s students and future generations of students and families at MC.
Creating a Board Designated Scholarship Fund ensures that students of Malden Catholic will have the financial aid they need for many generations. Designated funds are invested and pay out an established percentage of income per year in financial aid. For further information on the scholarship fund program please contact Mr. Robert J. McCarthy P’07, Senior Director for Institutional Advancement and Strategic Partnerships, at (781) 475-5333 or via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
