Chris Kuchar Named Head Coach of Malden Catholic Boys Hockey Program

Malden Catholic High School Acting Headmaster Brother Thomas J. Puccio, C.F.X. and Assistant Principal Mr. Jeffrey Smith have announced that Christopher Kuchar has been named the school’s new head varsity hockey coach. Kuchar will take over a storied program that has captured the MIAA Super Eight State Championship 5 times since 2011.

"I'm proud and honored to be the newest member of the Malden Catholic family," said Kuchar. "The history that has been established in athletics and academics since 1932 makes Malden Catholic a special place."

Kuchar brings over 20 years of high school hockey coaching experience to Malden Catholic and a proven record of success as head coach at both Amesbury High School (2010-2014) and Andover High School (2014-2019). In 2014, Kuchar brought Amesbury to the MIAA Division II State Tournament for the first time since 2006. More recently, his Andover squad captured Merrimack Valley Conference Division 1 league titles in 2016 and 2019. In 2018, Kuchar led Andover to their first Super Eight appearance in school history, earning a 5-seed after posting a 13-5-2 regular season. For his efforts in 2018, Kuchar was named the Hockey Coach of the Year by the Eagle-Tribune.

Beyond the wins and losses, Kuchar proved to be a significant force for program development while at Andover, having attracted more than 70 athletes to varsity hockey tryouts each year. Kuchar was instrumental in bringing a second junior varsity team to the Andover boys hockey program to expand opportunities for skill-building and player development. Over the course of his 5 years at the helm, he has also placed athletes in NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, and ACHA programs. Two former players now compete in the Hockey East at Northeastern and Boston University.

In addition to his experience in coaching and program development at the high school level, Kuchar has served as founder and president of Warrior Hockey School since 2017 and a head coach at Hockey Night in Boston, New England’s premier summer hockey showcase tournament.

Off the ice, Malden Catholic looks forward to welcoming Coach Kuchar into its vibrant school community rooted in the values of the Catholic and Xaverian traditions.

“We are confident that Coach Kuchar will be a great fit not just for our hockey program, but for the mission of Malden Catholic as well,” said Assistant Principal Jeffrey Smith. “When you look at how Coach Kuchar has inspired his players to give back to the local community and conduct themselves the right way as young men off the ice, it becomes clear just how much he has to offer our MC athletes for their development as good school citizens and positive role models.”

Kuchar comes aboard at an exciting time for Malden Catholic athletics as the department prepares to welcome newly appointed athletic director William Raycraft, longtime athletic director at Windham (NH) High School, on July 1. Said Raycraft of Coach Kuchar, “Coach Kuchar stands out not only for his coaching pedigree but also for his philosophy. He’s had a proven history of building successful programs and developing student-athletes on and off the ice, with many having such high praise for his character and commitment. We are very excited for the future of MC hockey.”
