Malden Catholic Names Reilly Christie as Director of Athletics

Malden Catholic today announced the appointment of Reilly Christie as its new athletic director, launching an exciting new era for one of Massachusetts’ premier high school athletic programs and its student-athletes.

Christie brings extensive experience in athletic leadership, program development, and student-athlete mentorship to Malden Catholic. In this role, he will oversee all aspects of the Lancers’ athletic programs, support a competitive portfolio of teams, and continue the school’s long-standing tradition of developing student excellence through learning and team sports.

“I am honored to join Malden Catholic and the legendary Lancers, with its special community of student-athletes, coaches, and families,” said Christie. “I look forward to building on the school’s strong tradition of developing leadership and character in students through an excellent academic and athletic experience and am excited to help build and grow champions at Malden Catholic.”

Christie most recently served as Director of Athletics at Salem High School. During his tenure, athletic participation increased from 22 percent to 47 percent. At the same time, he advanced inclusive programming through Salem’s Unified Sports program, which earned Unified Champion School status, and the annual Salem Girls in Sports Day clinic. He is also the MIAA Football State Tournament Director and District 5 Wrestling Committee representative. During Reilly’s time at Salem, the Witches won their first team state championship in 26 years and had 12 individual state champions. 

“Malden Catholic intentionally creates an excellent middle and high school experience through our rigorous academic and outstanding athletics programs, which, together, instill lessons in lifelong learning, leadership, and service in our students,” said Malden Catholic President John Thornburg. “MC athletics is entering a new era with Reilly Christie as our new athletics director and the recent coaching hires. We are making significant and strategic investments in our athletics programs that will elevate our students’ experience in the classroom, on the court, and on the field.”

Christie’s appointment comes at a time of significant momentum for Malden Catholic Athletics. In recent months, the school has made several significant coaching hires that underscore its commitment to strengthening its programs, including appointing Mark Garrity as Varsity Boys Basketball Head Coach, hiring Sharell Sanders as Varsity Girls Basketball Head Coach, and naming Billy Ryan as Head Coach for Boys Soccer and Arthur Staffiere as Head Coach for Girls Soccer. These additions reflect a strategic investment in Malden Catholic’s successful athletics programs across all sports to continue producing championship teams that compete at the highest levels of the Catholic Conference and MIAA Division I.

Christie will begin his role on July 13th.
