Online Bridge Team
An afterschool competition is held where online bridges are evaluated for design, total load, cost, and spectacular bridge failure. Several bridge designs then go on to the state competition. This past year one of Malden Catholic's online bridge teams placed in the top 10 in the state competition. A brief description of the Online Bridge competition follows:
The Boston Society of Civil Engineers runs a local version of the ASCE / West Point Bridge Design Contest, which is called the Ralph Salvucci Online Bridge Design Contest. According to Col. Stephen Ressler, the creator of this contest at West Point, we are the first ASCE local chapter to run a successful competition and by far the largest source of entrants into the competition anywhere in the country. Where the national contest offers a few very large prizes, this local contest offers a large number of small prizes. Last year, cash prizes were given to the top 3 teams. Other prizes include Amazon gift certificates, civil engineering related books, and ASCE T-shirts and certificates to the Top 100 teams. As students enroll in the competition, they are assigned e-mentors who make themselves available to answer questions for the students.
