Student-Athlete of the Week- FALL 2014

Sept. 4th – 11th      Ben Scarpa,  JV Football, Student-Athlete of Week.  Ben played tremendous against a strong Quincy football team. Leading the offense with 150+ yards on ground. Ben added two touchdowns, and a two point conversion for a total of 14 points for the Malden Catholic offense. Being a two way player, the Malden Catholic football team relied on Ben to play on both sides of the ball. Not only leading the attack on offense he added 7 tackles on the defensive side of the ball as well. Congratulations to Ben and the JV football team.

 

Sept. 18th – 26th    CONGRATULATIONS to Kyle Mullaney last week’s Student Athlete of the Week.  As the starting goalkeeper for the Varsity Soccer team, Kyle has had 2 clean sheets and has averaged 1.2 goals per games.  Kyle’s hard work pushes his teammates to constantly improve and is a model student-athlete.  Kyle’s determination and leadership have made Kyle an integral part of the MC soccer program.

 

 Sept. 26th -Oct. 2nd Congratulations to Junior Michael Cahill this week’s Student Athlete of the week- Michael has been the cross country team's #1 runner at each of the first three races of the 2014 season, including setting a personal best of 18:32 for the 5K (average pace of 5:57/mile), placing 2nd against Catholic Memorial last week at Franklin Park. This time was the fastest MC time at Franklin Park since the 2011 season. Michael followed that performance up with a strong 18:52 in the heat on Saturday at the Ocean State Invitational to lead the way again for the Lancers

Oct. 2nd- Oct. 9th Congratulations to Sophomore Michael Shea. Mike shot 1 over par 37 at Charles River CC in Newton at our Varsity Golf match vs Catholic Memorial. He holds our lowest season average of 38, to lead the Lancers.

 

Oct. 10th –Oct. 17th Congratulations to Sophomore Dante Egizi this week’s Student Athlete of the Week.  From defense Dante has a team leading 3 goals. His work ethic and positive on the pitch is an inspiration to all of his teammates. Johnny has lowered his time by over 3 minutes (!) since he joined the team this fall, and his enthusiasm for the sport is great to see. He ran his best time at Franklin Park by almost a minute at the league meet. At the twilight meet, he beat his previous best time by 90 seconds.

 

Oct. 18th – Oct. 25th  Congratulations to Sophomore John Camozzi , Student Athlete of the Week.  Johnny has lowered his time by over 3 minutes since he joined the team this fall, and his enthusiasm for the sport is great to see. He ran his best time at Franklin Park by almost a minute at the league meet. At the twilight meet, he beat his previous best time by 90 seconds.

Student Athlete of the Week November 28th – December 5th

Congratulations to the Art Club Mural Project members, winners of the high school Mural Project in Malden, and this week’s Student Athletes of the Week! Several members of the project are also members of MC’s Athletic programs. Steve Doucette, designer and painter is one of the vocalists who sings the National Anthem at MC’s home games, Chris Flemming designer and painter, is a captain on the Swim team as well as a member of the Lacrosse team, Liam Shaughnessy, painter, is a member of both the Soccer team and Swim team, Fred DeNisco, painter, is a member of the Swim team, and Connor Dillingham, painter, is a member of the Wrestling team. Project members also include Nick Leonce, Steven Rao, Michael Doyle, David Frigoletto, James Frigoletto, Corey Forrester and Candan Iuliano. Congratulations to all members of the project!

Week of Dec. 12th – Dec 19th

Congratulations to Varsity Wrestling’s Senior Captain Ian Steckel , Ian is our Student Athlete of the Week for the week of December  12th – December 19th. Ian’s match was the  highlight of the Wakefield tournament,  Ian beat the Sophomore sensation from Methuen who everyone had ranked #1 preseason by a score of 8-4. Ian was dominant in the victory, earning his 100th career win in the championship. 

Week of Dec. 19th – Dec. 26th

Congratulations to Varsity Basketball’s Senior Captain Ryan Smith. Ryan student athlete of the week for the Week of December 19th – December 26th . In the game vs Somerville, Ryan had 7 points, all in the second half including the go ahead baskets in the 3rd quarter. In addition, Ryan had an amazing 16 rebounds for the game, and one drawn charge. Without the efforts of Ryan, the outcome of the game would have been in jeopardy.

Week of Dec. 26th-Jan. 2nd

Congratulations Indoor Track Junior Ron Mastrocola. Ron is our Student athlete of the Week from the Dec. 26th to Jan 2nd. At our 12/30 Indoor meet  against BC High he placed 3rd in the 55m dash with a personal and team best time. With little rest he anchored the 4x400m relay team and ran the fastest split on the team.

Week of Jan. 2nd-Jan.9th

Congratulations to Varsity Hockey Goalies Alex Reissis and Kyle Casey Student Athletes of the Week. Both Alex and Kyle have back to back shut outs all against top ten opponents.

Week of Jan. 16th –Jan. 23rd

Congratulations to Student Athletes of the Week Jan. 16th –Jan. 23rd.   Swim’s 200 Free Relay team

Team Members are sophomore Alex Phan, junior Sean Xiao, senior Noel Charbonnier  and senior captain Connor Schwarze. The team qualified for the Div. 1 North sectionals in early January and last week vs St. John's  they qualified for the State 200 Free Relay , they have 4 first place finishes and 2 second  place finishes, their best time for this year is 1:38.22 . Congrats boys!

Week of Feb. 8th – Feb. 14th

Congratulations to Dennis Gosselin Student Athlete of the Week February 8th – February 14th . Dennis finished in 6th place at the D2M Sectional Tournament.  Dennis had a very hard season, giving up 75-80 pounds every match.  Dennis never quit, and always stepped up to accept the challenge.  Dennis was rewarded for his hard work this season over the weekend by becoming a Sectional medalist as a Freshman. Congratulations Dennis!

Week February 15th – Feb. 22nd

Congratulations to Karlen Joas Student Athlete of the Week February 15th – February 22nd.  In a game against Woburn in the Comcast Tournament over break, Karlens scored his 1000th career point.  He is only the 8th player in the history of the program to do so.  The game vs Woburn was won by a score of 68-63!  Congratulations Karlens!
