Head Basketball Coach: Mr. Jim McCune
Jim McCune is entering his 3rd season as Lancer Head Basketball Coach and his 27th season of coaching.
McCune has accumulated 371 wins in his Head Coaching career. In addition, Coach McCune has been named “Coach Of The Year” twice each by the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association (2002, 2006), and The Lowell Sun (2004, 2008). His Lancer teams have qualified for the Massachusetts State Tournament in each of his 2 years as Head Coach.
Coach McCune is a graduate of Somerville High School ’76 and the Journeyman Electrician Program at the Franklin Institute of Technology ’88. He currently resides in Somerville, Ma. with his wife Sharon, and sons Jimmy (Harvard 2014), and Matthew (MC 2016).
Head Coach Varsity Hockey: Mr. John McLean
John McLean is entering his 3rd year as Head Varsity Coach and his 6th year at Malden Catholic.
McLean came to Malden Catholic with extensive coaching experience which includes the Boston Bruins Skating Coach, Tampa Bay Lightning Amateur Scout, Assistant Men’s Hockey College at Merrimack College and Leader Director of Dynamic Skating.During McLean’s time behind the bench, the Lancers have won three straight Super 8 Division 1A State Championships. During two of these championships, John served as Head Coach. John was named Coach of the Year in 2012 by the Boston Globe, ESPN Boston and Hockey Night in Boston.
Varsity Swim Coach: Mr. Joe Gaff
Joe Gaff is entering his 7th season as Head Swim Coach and his 25th year of coaching. During his time at Malden Catholic, Gaff has also coached Football and Baseball.
Joe is a graduate of St Dominic Savio High School and he received hisBachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from Western New England College. Gaff was elected into the Chelsea High School Hall of Fame as a Coach in 2012.
Joe Gaff is currently an Everett Police Officer assigned to the traffic division. Joe is married to his wife Nanci and has 2 sons, Kris and Cory. Kris is a member of the Everett Police Department, and Cory, MC Class of 2010, is currently a student athlete on the football team at Plymouth State University.
Varsity Wrestling Coach: Mr. Scott Hansen
Scott Hansen enters his first year as Head Wrestling Coach at Malden Catholic. Hansen’s previous coaching experience includes assistant coach at Milton High School for 2 years, assistant coach at First Colonial High School in Virginia Beach for 3 years, and volunteer assistant coach at Springfield Technical Community College for a year. Coach Hansen is a graduate of Westbrook High School in Westbrook, Maine, where he was a State Finalist, he is a 2009 graduate of Old Dominion University earning a degree in Exercise Science.
Coach Hansen works at Equinox Sports Club as a personal trainer and lives in Malden with his wife Shannon and dog Zeus.
Varsity Indoor Track Coach: Mr. Zachary Creeden
Zach Creeden enters his second year as Head Track Coach at Malden Catholic. Creeden is a 2010 graduate of Billerica Memorial High School where he lettered in Cross Country, Indoor, and Outdoor track. Collegiately, Zach ran both cross country and track at Worcester State University. At WSU, he was a two-time qualifier for the NCAA Regional Cross Country Championships. He was a member of the team’s 4x800m relay team that quailed for multiple Division III New England Championships and an All-New England Championship. He served as the President of the Athlete Mentoring Program and earned MASCAC All-Academic Honors 6 times.
Zach received his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Worcester State and is currently a Constituent Relations Associate within the External Affairs Department at Malden Catholic.
