The selection policy at the Joseph J. O'Donnell Learning Commons supports the curriculum and efforts of the dedicated faculty members at the school. Selection helps to support the subject areas covered in assignments each year as well as material to support the professional needs of the faculty. Both print and online material, including databases and eBooks are made available in the library collection. A selection of audio-books and DVDs are also provided. The librarian provides web resources that are available to students and faculty 24/7.

Suggestions for library materials should be sent to Mrs. Davidson-Heller at davidsonk@maldencatholic.org.

There may be times when the Joseph J. O'Donnell Learning Commons does not have what a student needs. Our library is part of the Massachusetts Library System. As part of this system students are able to borrow books from other libraries. It generally takes from 2-3 weeks to receive materials requested.

NOTE TO STUDENTS:  It's always wise to do your research early especially if you need to take advantage of ILL.

If you need an article and we do not have access to a particular database to retreive the article, then you can see the librarian and she will request the article for you through ILLIAD and the Boston Public Library.

You should allow 3 to 5 days for online article delivery.

The Joseph J. O'Donnell Learning Commons will consider the donation of books and other materials with the understanding that they need to be evaluated before they can be accepted into the collection.

The Joseph J. O'Donnell Learning Commons is a place for doing homework, studying for classes, researching assignments, collaborating on a group project, and leisure reading. Students are expected to be considerate of fellow students and others who wish to work in an academic setting. Although talking is permitted, quiet study is the rule.

Food and drink are NOT allowed in the library. Cell phones must be kept in the OFF position at all times per school rules. Headphones are allowed for the computers and iPads for working on school related assignments. After school hours, students must leave the library to talk on their phones.

Books may be taken out for a period of three weeks and renewed for another three weeks.
Students must show proper ID to check out material.

There is a printer and photocopy machine available. Students make their own copies.

Our electronic resource collection currently contains over 60 databases including both subscription and those utilized through the Massachusetts Library System. New database trials are ongoing throughout the year. eBooks are available through the EBSCO High School eBook Collection as well as through Baker & Taylor, Biblioboard, and EBL.

Username/password required for EBSCO.

The librarian provides a wealth of information and material to help students become 21st century learners, preparing for college and life-long careers. Reading for pleasure is promoted through the Lancer Short Story Club, special book displays, exhibits, and summer reading.

Students are expected to respect the rights of others and return or renew books on time. All library accounts must be settled before issuance of final report cards.

NOTE: Damaging or losing library books or other library materials will result in being charged full price for the item(s).
